Lancashire wedding photographer Jeff Ascough is a world-renowned documentary wedding photographer serving Cheshire, Manchester, Liverpool, Merseyside, Lancashire, Lytham, the UK, and Europe. Jeff's reputation has afforded him the opportunity to photograph in many of the North West's most popular wedding venues-including: the Hillbark Hotel on the Wirral, Merseyside , Thornton Manor on the Wirral, Merseyside , Crewe Hall in Cheshire, Peckforton Castle, Rowton Hall, Soughton Hall, The Lowry in Manchester Great John Street Hotel in Manchester The Midland Hotel in Manchester
Jeff has also undertaken wedding photography at Rookery Hall in Cheshire, The Radission edwardian Hotel in Manchester, Liverpool Metropolitan cathedral Manchester Town Hall, Liverpool Town Hall, Linthwaite House in The Lake District Knowsley Hall on Merseyside, Stanley House in Blackburn, Tatton Park in Cheshire, The Grand Hotel in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, Hoghton Towers in LancashireJeff Ascough began his career in 1989, but became disillusioned with the intrusive, predictable, and formal photography of the time.
Taking inspiration from the documentary work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, and Sebastiao Salgado, Jeff began to approach the wedding as an observer working in the background, discreetly taking pictures that captured the very essence of the day. Over the years his photographic style grew and matured, guided by his love for strong composition and available light, and by his instinctive ability for capturing the 'decisive moment'.
By the mid 1990's Jeff had completely moved away from all aspects of traditional wedding photography, and was forging a path with a new, exciting brand of black and white documentary photography. Awards and accolades followed and Jeff became a tutor, seminar leader, and competition judge for Fuji, Kodak, BIPP and MPA in the UK.
Jeff's work reached a global audience in 2004, when he became the first British wedding photographer to be featured in America's prestigious Washington Post. He was called "A master at shooting by available light" and his pictures were described as "Simply gorgeous work... among the best we have ever seen - an absolute pleasure to see."
In 2005 he was voted one of the top five wedding photographers in the world by the BBC, and appeared in the TV documentary 'Masters of Wedding Photography'. In February 2007, American Photo included Jeff in its list of the ten best wedding photographers in the world. He was the only British photographer to make the list.
Jeff's work and reputation have seen him photograph weddings all over the UK and Europe, from castles in Scotland to chateaux in France. During 2007 he shot the celebrity weddings of England cricket star Kevin Pietersen to 'Liberty X' singer Jessica Taylor, 'Eastenders', 'Strictly Come Dancing', and 'Waterloo Road' actress Jill Halfpenny to 'Doomsday' filmstar Craig Conway, '24' and 'Baywatch' star John Allen Nelson to model Justine Eyre, and 'Radiohead' guitarist Ed O'Brien to Susan Kobrin.
"I am absolutely over the moon with our photos, thank you so much! I honestly couldn't be happier, I felt like I was reliving the day, they made me laugh & cry with happiness, you totally captured the day! Thank you so much Jeff!"
Jessica Taylor and Kevin Pietersen
"I don't think we have as yet told you how fabulous we think the photos are! thanks for doing such a great job, with the pictures and also the beautiful album."
Ed O'Brien and Susan Kobrin
"Blown away. Filled to the brim with emotion. Overfilled, actually. How to describe the work of a master? Truly, Jeff, your photos of our wedding not only brought every memory back to life in such an immediate fashion, but captured the moments as art. Emotional art. Each of our family members who have seen them have remarked that they are the most elegant and beautiful wedding photos any of them have ever seen. I'm sure every one of your clients expresses the same joy upon seeing your work as we have, or as we have attempted to. Nothing I can say adequately expresses how I felt upon viewing the slideshow the first time, the second time, as well as the third - with more viewings to come I'm sure."
John Allen Nelson and Justine Eyre
"We just wanted to tell you how thrilled we are with the photos. We really do love them. A friend of ours has just rung up crying saying she feels like she is there again as she is looking at the pictures. I think that just about sums it up. We really are over the moon!"
Jill Halfpenny and Craig Conway
"You did some wonderful wedding photos for us. We really treasure our album - it's fantastic!"
Ian Kelsey and Mia Michaels
"We just wanted to wait until we'd shown the album to our families and friends before writing - just in case we were biased in our reaction to it. But it turns out that everyone who has seen the photos - whether in the album or through the weblink you provided, are as stunned as we were. The photos are just amazing. When we look through our album, it's like re-living the whole day. Every tender moment, every funny comment, even shaking with fear and emotion under my veil before walking up the aisle - you have captured it all and yet you have done it as if by magic. Because for the most part, I didn't even know you were there. And that's the mark of a true professional. Thank you for this wonderful and beautiful record of the best day of our lives. PS A lot of my girlfriends wanted your number - even those without boyfriends - so they could keep it ready for their 'big day'!!"
Aimee and Tim
"Words cannot express how thrilled we both were with the photos and the album. We always knew we could rely on you to capture the day perfectly and yet you still managed to exceed all expectations we had. The service you offer is quite exceptional - always quick to respond to calls and emails, having the photos available on the website exactly when you had promised they would be and fully living up to the mantle of one of the world's best wedding photographers. I could not fault your service in any way. Everyone who has seen our photos say they are the best they have ever seen and remark on your professionalism on the day. You were non-intrusive and stunned the minister and family with the speediness of the formal pics."
Karen and David Tait
"David and I (and our friends and families) are absolutely stunned by these most beautiful pictures. You have captured our day exquisitely; not just in the setting and atmosphere, but also those funny personal characteristics of our family members! We were completely blown away by the Carne seat pictures; we remember you saying at the time that the light was stunning, but never imagined in a million years that you could use that light to create such a dramatic backdrop to our special day. We have re-lived the day through your pictures several times over now and, without a doubt, will have a wedding album to die for. Thank you very, very much."
Nikki and David Cobbald

"Jeff Ascough is a master of visual narrative. His images are timeless in their power to illuminate and record the joy and the profound mystery that comprises the wedding day. Crafted with indelible precision, the images bear witness to the timelessness of the event - the generations gathered to witness the ceremony and celebrate the wedding."
Kathy Madison, Journalist
"One of the world’s premier wedding photographers."
Professional Photographer Magazine.
"If Cartier-Bresson shot weddings. That’s what it feels like to look into the images of Jeff Ascough’s incredible, evocative and emotional available light wedding photography. His images are so in tune with the moment that they transcend the traditional notion of wedding photographs and evoke such incredible emotion. You can’t help but feel that this man has such a reverence and sense of worship for the wedding, it’s every subtlety and nuance."
John Mackay, Author and photographer
"One of the world’s best wedding photojournalists."
Rangefinder
"I normally do not contact photographers after viewing their work online, but I must say that your portfolio is absolutely stunning. Unlike many others in the wedding field, you have obviously developed a very gifted eye. I have no other ulterior motive other than to pass on a compliment to a talented photographer. Many photographers shoot B/W and ramp up the contrast to create some semblance of creativity and artist impression, while leaving color images flat and boring. But you compose b/w with class and taste, and your color images are just as crisp and insightful. Consider these merely complimentary words from a online passer-by. Please keep up your amazing work."
Tim Mroz, X-Rite Color Services
"Jeff Ascough can all but disappear in a room full of wedding guests. After all, wedding photojournalists are supposed to blend in with the crowd. But put his images anywhere near other wedding photographs and suddenly, he stands out."
Kodak Pro Pass
"I looked at your website early this morning and came to the conclusion an hour later that you have done what I wish I could have done the few times I did a wedding. Actually I came to the conclusion almost right away, but was drawn to your work for more than an hour. The subtleties of the moments you see just knocked me out. What few weddings I did I insisted they hire another photographer for the group shots and let me do my thing with 1600 ASA B&W. On occasion, I got lucky. It is obvious that you are locked in. I suspect you know the work of some of the guys that endorse the UPstrap ... Jay Maisel, Eric Meola, Howard Schatz, Sean Kernan and a host of guys that also blow me away. You are most defiantly in their league. People far more important and influential than I have already said it but from one shooter to another ... your work is monster."
Al Stegmeyer, Upstrap Inc
"This guy's eye is amazing ... when the right occasion arises, I can't wait to fly him to the States to shoot something for me ..."
John Cassar, Executive Producer 24
"I am fully aware that someone of Jeff's talent does not need their ego stroked, however, I have never been so moved, so touched by art as I found myself in another place, lost in the images, those real, tangible moments where life's greatest moments have been frozen in time ... it astonishes me how I have no connection to any of these individuals and at the same time in the very depth of my soul I feel as though I have shared a moment with them ... what an amazing gift! A truly amazing gift!"
